Overview
The internship had two rotations, the first in healthcare M&A which included work on presentations for clients, note taking in calls and completing assignments to assess knowledge of various concepts like DCFs, LBOs and CSCs. The second rotation, in ECM UK, involved price updates on a daily basis to build up knowledge on the type of news and economic data that is most important, as well as detailed notes from earning calls, updates to clients on peers earning releases and work on presentations for clients.
Skills
I found the ECM rotation developed my understanding of markets and what is most important especially in terms of price impact. as well as understanding concepts across different products that GS would offer, such as ABOs (which I had not heard of before).
Responsibilities
I found it varied, usually in the first couple of days there is less responsibility that can then be built upon as you show reliability.
Support & Guidance
A great amount of support and guidance was offered, particularly in the second rotation in ECM
Culture
I found everyone incredibly friendly and it felt like you could reach out to anyone for coffee and they would be happy to give you the time and advice from their career experiences
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the experience overall, as well as the challenges such as adapting to a fast-paced work environment compared to the day-to-day of University life which is a big change. The most important factor is the people I was surrounded by as this can made the learning experience more enjoyable as well as the challenges easier to adapt to.
Yes
Be prepared to work hard but also pace yourself to avoid becoming overwhelmed, as there is a lot to learn and the level of responsibility given can build up quickly. Overcommunicate with your team to share what you are enjoying and what you want to learn more on, also guide their expectations on your deliverables. Ask anyone you would like to speak to for advice over a coffee!
