Overview
Dependent on ongoing trials. This could include programming in R and SAS, creating and QCing TFLs, learning and applying relevant statistical methodology (e.g. survival analysis), conducting literature reviews and a wide variety of other projects.
Skills
Developed skills in programming (especially SAS, R Shiny) Learnt new statistical methods, trial designs and standard practices used in medical statistics
Responsibilities
Yes, but not strictly relied upon - I had clear responsibilities, but if I was unable or needed help I would be okay.
Support & Guidance
Lots of support and guidance, especially by line manager who only had a single student to manage and were readily available. They were also happy to help me with any strictly personal development ideas/questions that I had.
Culture
Very friendly. You are treated as an equal and the importance of good communication is heavily emphasised.
Your Impressions
Immensely! It was a hugely valuable and enjoyable year of my life and a welcome break from University. Having this experience has already gotten me an incredible summer internship and I am sure lots more will follow!
Yes
Show your interest in the industry! They want people who will actually enjoy the year - for the good of you both! If you are already here you must be doing your research. Sign up to PSI (medical stats charity) for free to be a student member and go along to the careers fair and maybe some talks! Reach out to the previous students who have gone on similar placements too if you can.
