Overview
I am a Debt Capital Markets intern, and having completed 1 week training at the beginning of the internship, I have rotated around 2 desks - Loan and Bond Origination. I spent 5 weeks on the Bonds side and 4 weeks on the Loans side. I have also had the opportunity to work with the EM desk, Syndication, and Liability Management desk. Typically, I am helping out with pitches and updating pricings for the Bonds side.
Skills
I have learnt many new skills, whilst also developing my existing skills. I have improved with excel and powerpoint, and learnt how to use the various Bloomberg functions. As well as this, I have significantly developed my communication skills and time management. The internship has allowed me to learn such a large amount of new things in a very short period of time, which I have really enjoyed.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility early on in my internship and have had a significant amount of exposure to deals. I was able to join both internal and external meetings with important stakeholders, and sit in and learn about the bond issuance process. I think that the exposure that I have had at MUFG really makes the programme unique in comparison to other places.
Support & Guidance
I have received a good amount of support and guidance throughout my internship. I was assigned a buddy for each of my rotations, who were really helpful and supportive. As well as this, everyone I contacted was very open to meeting and grabbing a coffee, regardless of their position. My line managers also have been very supportive, giving me regular feedback and guiding me throughout.
Culture
The culture at MUFG is very welcoming and friendly, I think that the people really create a warm and supportive environment. Everyone I have met has been friendly, honest, and have given me excellent advice. One of the main things I have really enjoyed about my internship has been the people that I have worked with and met, and the general working atmosphere
Your Impressions
I have really loved my internship at MUFG, coming from a nonFinance background with little experience in the corporate world, MUFG has been very supportive and helped me with my development. I have learnt a significant amount in a very short period of time through the exposure that I have had and the help and time that the other employees have given to me. The atmosphere is really great and would highly recommend this experience.
Yes
I would advise to do research and know the firm well, show that you are keen to learn and that you are motivated. It does not matter if you do not study finance, as long as you have the right attitude
