Overview
The role involves me working in Early Product Development and Manufacture (solid state) on a lab based project. My role is independent lab work with training provided by Formulation and Analytical Scientists. On a day to day basis, I first check my emails to check for any updates, meetings for the day. Then I step in a lab to work on the project assigned to me. I am currently working on creating amorphous solid dispersions using a spray dryer. After creating my samples, I then use analytical techniques to test my samples e.g: using XRPD, DSC, TGA. I then discuss my results with my supervisor and what we will do going forward. I then have lunch with other interns which gives us a chance to network with each other. I and the other interns also schedule meetings with other Pharmacists at AZ to find out/ more about their roles which usually takes place after lunch. After completing all the necessary lab work, I finish work for the day!
Skills
I have developed a lot of networking and independent working skills when it comes to lab work. I also feel more confident being in a lab by myself. As a pharmacy student, I didn't know a lot about analytical techniques therefore I have learnt a lot about equipment used for analysis and therefore have developed skills important to analyse data.
Responsibilities
As my project required a lot of independent lab work after essential training being provided, there was responsibility given to me in terms of how and when I wanted to carry out my tasks. I was able to plan my project work around meetings and events taking place on site. I was given the opportunity to share my ideas confidently which were received with a positive attitude.
Support & Guidance
I felt confident to ask anyone in the team if I was ever unsure about something. If I wanted to use an equipment I didn't know how to, I was directed to approach the appropriate individual who could train me. The support has been great and there is always someone you can reach out to.
Culture
The work culture is great! There is personal space given to everyone. I can go make a cup of tea when I want and I know many other work places where you wouldn't be allowed to do that. It never felt as if someone is keeping an eye on you. Everyone is supportive of each others work and is always willing to help. There is a lot of diversity and everyone is respectful of each others differences, culture and religion.
Your Impressions
I had a lot of fun meeting other interns and Pharmacists currently working at AZ. It opened up a completely new career option and highlighted to me the many opportunities that exist in the industry. I really enjoyed working on my project, knowing the value this can add to patient's lives makes the experiences extremely rewarding!
Yes
It is a great place to work with lots of opportunities to meet great people. There are lots of things to get involved in at AZ and every day is a day to learn something new!
