Overview
As an intern I rotated with two different desks within the Global Markets group of UBS. I got to shadow people working, having one-on-ones with colleagues and managers, helping with different tasks, and working on a main project. On top of that, I participated in social events, weekly markets warps, speaker sessions, trading games, market making games, roundtables with senior management, etc. It is very diversified and changes from day to day.
Skills
I have improved on a bunch of (new) skills: - Communication skills (presenting, reporting to manager) - Understanding of financial markets (e.g. how to come up with trade ideas) - Networking with other interns/colleagues - Improved on financial knowledge - Problem solving (e.g. developing solutions during my project) - Time management (handling multiple deadlines and a busy schedule) - Excel and ppt proficiency - Knowledge about inner workings of an investment bank - Options theory
Responsibilities
For me this was depending on the desk because as an intern I was not allowed or authorized to participate in some tasks (e.g. actual trading). Although, in general I have the feeling that managers give you responsibility where it is possible so that you can still have an useful contribution to the team.
Support & Guidance
I received plenty of support: - HR was very approachable for questions/help (e.g. weekly drop-in sessions) - Line manager and rotation manager were always willing to help - Buddy and mentor also allowed for more informal questions/chats - In general, I have the feeling that everybody is very approachable to ask questions/ask for help
Culture
The culture was very welcoming to the interns in my opinion. As previously mentioned, everyone is very approachable and willing to teach you (I had a lot of coffee chats with different people). A nice and friendly atmosphere to work in.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship a lot. I liked the whole package from working in a big city to having the opportunity to learn a lot from more experienced people. It can be a little stressful at times when you have to do presentations or have to participate in one of the games but this is also part of the learning process.
Yes
Be prepared to work in a fast paced environment, be willing to work hard and learn a lot in a short timespan, and don't forgot to enjoy the ride.
