Overview
On a daily basis I would come in, email team members to set up meetings. Work on AWS to try and solve a data science problem. This would usually involve a lot of switching between AWS, data camp, and just googling things. I often meet 1-1 with my manager and would spend a few hours in the afternoon shadowing a recent grad who is working in data & analytics.
Skills
I have learned the basics of python, I've learned about machine learning model creation, natural language processing, and data science as a broader area.
Responsibilities
Not much. I think I was working in a team where I couldn't work directly with the data and issues at hand due to the risk of the models and the sensitivity of the data but this did not mean I was any less involved in my team.
Support & Guidance
I had incredible support from my grad buddy, my manager, and a recent grad in my team who helped me through many of my day to day tasks. I was supported and guided on every level.
Culture
The general company culture is quite calm and reserved. People are focused and invested in their work. In speaking with many people, the work is not always thrilling but maintain a level of academic type interest and new research to come up with solutions. The people are generally very kind and welcoming.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement. I feel as though I learned lots of valuable information that will help me throughout my career and made some great connections. I found the daily work interesting and i think I've gained many new skills.
