Overview
There was a lot of classroom based learning about the firms practice area, particularly to do with corporate and global financial markets. There was also networking events and presentations made about diversity/pro bono Majority of times I spent shadowing a corporate seat (financial institutions group) and learning what the department does, the clients they work with and the matters they are dealing with. I was also set tasks such as research and incorporating comments into documents.
Skills
I have developed the ability to manage time and complete different tasks within the same day. I have also learnt communication skills and attention to detail when it came to reviewing documents. Another key skill is the ability to network l, particularly when put in a group of trainees and associates.
Business Insight
It was an eye opening experience. It was interesting to have access to client data and shadow lawyers for a week, especially when it came to joining calls and reading the documents which were being worked on. The work was also complex, so it did take a while to understand. It was intellectually stimulating to understand and identify potential issues which the lawyers were looking for.
Culture
The company culture was amazing. There were groups of people who do not drink and they completely understood, and offered non alcoholic drinks. There is also a prayer room and bathroom which were suitable for Muslims. They also had gender neutral toilets.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it to a large extent, I felt included when it came to diversity as well as being involved in the matters that the lawyers are working on.
Yes
I would suggest for them to be themselves, be expressive of what you want and what your goals are. I would also suggest they show a key passion for corporate law and discuss Clifford Chance specifically (in terms of how they differ with other firms).
