Overview
I do the daily PnL attribution, reporting and commentary for Debt Capital Markets (DCM) and Treasury. This can involve using MUFG's SAP platform to investigate why the front office's expected PnL is different to the actual PnL. I make adjustments to ensure the PnL is accurate. I do the daily market commentary, which gets sent out to the entire Finance division. This involves commenting on macroeconomic policies and data releases and linking them to FX, equities, credit spreads and bond yields. I also give a market overview in the weekly Product Control meeting.
Skills
I have become more confident with MUFG's platform Musbi, which is an SAP platform that is integral to the role. The platform requires coding skills in order to create graphs and formulae. I have improved my interpersonal skills by learning to network with stakeholders and seniors. I have improved my problem solving skills, when having to figure out what is driving the variance between the PnLs.
Responsibilities
Unlike with some other internships, I have been able to do 'real work'. The daily PnL is extremely important to the front office, so although I have been given easier PnLs to do (as I am an intern), I am still completely responsible for them. It is up to me to contact the relevant front office colleague if there are any issues with PnL. If I make a mistake, it is my name on the PnL email and it is up to me to correct it.
Support & Guidance
My team is extremely supportive and helpful. I have never been scared to ask for help and have received lots of support from most team members.
Culture
My experience of the company culture was great. I have interacted with seniors from VP to MD, who were extremely helpful, friendly and down to earth. The general atmosphere is so lovely - I have attended lots of social events such as several terrace BBQs, work drinks, mehndi, the summer garden party.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship. The internship is very well organised - I believe it is designed to provide students with a range of experience and knowledge. For example, everybody had to take part in the group project, which was similar to what a Relationship Manager in GCIB would be doing. We also attended talks from Credit Trading to Transaction Banking. We were also set the task of having a minimum of 8 coffee chats with people in other teams.
Yes
Be yourself - don't be afraid to show your personality! Don't stress too much if you don't know all the technicals - your interviewer wants to see that you're curious and willing to learn.
