Overview
I sat under the Talent advisory space - this product focuses on developing and retaining talent. I was involved in a lot of data analysis and building decks based on the data. The Data could range from headcount quantitative to qualitative comments and opinions. Projects I was mainly involved in was MD Promotion - where I supported in gathering numbers and names of MDs who were newly promoted or hired that were going to attend workshops based in new york. I supported in the administrative and logistics of building decks and creating name badges for over 200 attendees. Another Project is succession planning whereby I ensure up to date database. The rest of my projects involved revamping websites and newsletters that supported the business (with a fresh set of lenses) in order to make it more modern. These projects involved good time management, mailbox management, and also a lot of excel and powerpoint. Meetings on a daily were also common.
Skills
I have developed both soft and technical skills. Soft skills my communication has improved a lot as in a corporate setting time is very valuable, therefore being able to express thoughts and opinions need to be relevant and concise. I have developed good client and relationship management by being prompt in responses as well as being a good listener and actively engaging in conversations. Technical skills developed during my time here is excel and powerpoint. In particular being able to use VLOOKUP function and pivot tables in order to crunch numbers and data. Powerpoint trainings included how to format decks and what should be included stylistically.
Responsibilities
I was surprisingly given much responsibility. Although it is down to the intern to drive their summer and experience, the responsibility given to you is pretty big from day 1. This involved being able to manage your own time and timetable - i.e. setting up meetings and networking sessions. More project based responsibility, I was given tasks to pull data and make a deck to present to an MD, and as an intern you are given that analyst expectations and roles to an extent.
Support & Guidance
The support and guidance provided during my internship at J.P. Morgan was outstanding. My direct manager was always supportive and we would have regular check-ins. On top of this JPM assigns interns a junior buddy and a senior mentor to help you navigate your way around the firm and career. Both were incredibly supportive and encouraging. The people are also very supportive, there are many people who look after the interns. Managers, Buddies, Mentors, Program Sponsors, and the Recruiters are all involved along every way and it would be odd if you went a day without interacting with at least one of them on a daily basis.
Culture
The culture and atmosphere at JPM is amazing. The people are intelligent and the calibre of talent - I could not be more complimentary. Depending on the team you are based and the amount of responsibility given, it is often relaxed but also direct. People here bring their authentic personalities and selves and it is encouraged by the company. The learning culture is also amazing, everyone is keen to share their thoughts and knowledge, and there are many resources in order to consolidate learnings!
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship to a great extent. The projects were enjoyable and the things I have learnt here were relevant to industry knowledge and firmwide relevance. I was able to learn and apply quickly, and across different things. The opportunities to socialise and network were great, interns were given many leadership insight talks from the CEO down to leaders of particular markets and division. Overall the work was fun, the people are great and the company is unlike any other.
Yes
Know why you want to be at J.P. Morgan and look in yourself to identify with what JPM stands for. The company is very relaxed and approachable, well structured but with a lot of responsibility. It is still however very corporate. If you want a modern more open space vibe, perhaps consider other companies, as JPM is structured very office like and traditional (unless you are at the other offices). Network with people already in the firm and learn about what makes them stay and why they entered their role. Everyone here are very tactful and move with purpose.
