Overview
Preparing presentations for clients, update market pricing, learning more about what each of the teams do. Analysing macroeconomic trends and writing reports based on that. Shadowing teams on other desks, to gain a better understanding of their roles and how the debt capital markets team interact with each other.
Skills
New Skills: Understanding the key characteristics of fixed income securities (in particular, Investment Grade Corporate Bonds) and how they are priced. Gaining a better understanding of the fixed income universe and the Eurobond market. Improved ability to Excel, PowerPoint and Bloomberg, as well as general presentation skills.
Responsibilities
Yes, from the second week on the desk, I was writing the first drafts of presentations for clients, and otherwise worked on projects / emails / market updates which I often sent directly to clients. Internally, I also covered for people when they were away, and liaised with several different desks within debt capital markets.
Support & Guidance
My team were available to answer any questions I had on the tasks I was assigned. After I had completed a project, my team always checked it, and gave me clear comments on what could be improved. Through this support and guidance, I was able to clarify points of uncertainty, and the comments after each draft enabled me to improve my overall presentation skills.
Culture
As with most jobs in the finance sector, the hours went beyond 9-5, but my team were there to help when things became stressful, and were a source of encouragement when I found a task tricky. The general atmosphere was one where people worked hard, and were driven to succeed.
Your Impressions
Overall the internship was an enjoyable experience; I learnt a great deal in a short amount of time, was able to understand how a big organisation like Citi operates, and gain an understanding of what a career in finance entailed.
Yes
Be prepared to work hard, and ensure you are driven to succeed - but once you get into a rhythm on this job, the work is satisfying, you learn a lot, and an internship offers a great deal of opportunities to prove yourself now, and make a strong start to one's career.
