Overview
Main role was to help the team with excel and powerBI tasks. Due to the nature of the work the real expectation was simply to show eagerness in learning and an ability to quickly pick up the concepts. Most of my days were spent gaining excel, powerquery and powerBI skills and then applying them to basic actuary concepts.
Skills
Yes. Excel, PowerQuery, PowerBI and basic actuary concepts and a good surface level understanding of the insurance market.
Responsibilities
Yes I was. Even though Actuary work requires significantly more prior training then accounting and so you feasibly can't be given proper work I was given a lot of responsibility such as creating a PowerBI dashboard for a major client.
Support & Guidance
I was given a lot of support. We had weekly meetings with a manager who would go in large amounts of detail about the insurance market and the basics of Actuary reserving techniques. Whenever I had a question I knew that I could easily ask anyone in my team.
Culture
BDO has a brilliant culture and atmosphere. It is friendly and welcoming and even very senior partners will happily talk to you which I would assume is not the same at other large organisations.
Your Impressions
I really thoroughly enjoyed my internship and time at BDO. If I was given a graduate position I would very much strongly consider it.
Yes
Be authentic and make sure you maximise your entire time at BDO. The first week is inductions so you only really have 5 weeks with your team so make the most of it!
