    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The role, on a day to day basis, consists of firstly having a meeting with the team to see the progress of the Audit and what needs to be done and what has been done. After this there was some work assigned to me by the manager. Furthermore, if I was not sure how to complete the task then I would get into contact with a team member to teach me and then complete my task.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my skills of asking questions and being curious, because you have to have a very proactive approach in the workplace and make sure to ask if you don't understand something and reach out to people. I have also developed my communication skills and networking skills. I have improved my skills in excel and gained knowledge in various areas of finance through researching companies. I have developed my team work skills through working in a team on projects and with my fellow interns.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • At the beginning of the placement it took some time to get my bearings and I wasn't given too much responsibility. I think this was a time where team mates can see your skill set and experience and give a range of tasks to see your understanding and abilities. Later on I feel I was given much more responsibility and started to gain a deeper understanding of the field through the work I was given and also see the system in place and how the audit process plays out.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received lots of support and guidance in the internship. The managers and team members on projects were always supportive and nice. There were always people to go to with questions and people made effort to get back to you or refer you to someone who could help. The system of a buddy, people manager and project manager also creates a system of layered support so there is always someone available to talk through things with.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is incredibly nice and welcoming. Whilst I was here there was a cultural ay event which was amazing to see. The office was full of people and everyone had made a massive effort to bring food, dress in their cultural attire and people took time out of their day to introduce each other to different customs and foods. This was one example of many that show that the staff are always conscientious and welcoming to everyone.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement a lot. I got to meet lots of new people which was very fun. The people I worked with were always really nice. The work that I did was (not always) most of the time interesting and I got to learn a lot. If I had questions and need to ask there was always help available. Also, if I made mistakes everyone was very understanding and there wasn't any fear or anxiety about being given a task with no help or guidance.

  • 7. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BDO
  • I would advice people who apply to BDO to look into the areas they are interested in for example tax-audit etc... before applying as there are many different areas that I was not aware of before applying. I would say that the company has a big focus on being moral and ethical and lots of interesting CSR initiatives which is really cool and something to get involved in. I would also say there are lots of new trainees and interns and grad schemes so there is a really big social scene with lots of young people so that is goo to get involved in as well.
