Overview
My role includes working on an engagement/project/audit within a given sector. Given I am not a chartered accountant, I complete the tasks and assignments given to me by the PM/AM/Senior on the audit. My main aim is to help the team in whatever way I can - and benefit the progress/development of the audit/project.
Skills
Yes - in particular my excel and IT skills. I believe I also developed my attention to detail as the internship progressed.
Responsibilities
I believe I was given an apt amount of responsibility - especially given that I am not a chartered accountant. For example, in my first week I was assigned to a quarterly review at a critical time (it was due soon after my arrival) - therefore, I was given a fair amount of responsibility and trust by the team to complete my tasks in a timely manner and to a high level/quality.
Support & Guidance
I looked to receive support and guidance exclusively when struggling with tasks, or to further my understanding on a topic. Having said that, support and guidance was always available to me (as an intern) at any point throughout if I ever needed it, whether it was a team member, or people manager.
Culture
I really liked the company's inclusive and friendly culture. I also liked the values that BDO stands for - Being bold, collaborative, genuine and responsible - are all things I associate with my own character. I thought everyone was really friendly and easy to get on with. I had a good time getting to know the teams I worked with, and other interns.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the whole internship - especially the training and induction week. This was a great opportunity to meet the other interns, and ask as many questions as possible to learn more about audit and the company itself. In all, I think the internship was very well put together, and offered a great experience. I was able to learn a lot. I would highly recommend this internship to anyone seeking an internship in accountancy/finance/audit.
Yes
I would encourage them to try their best in earning a place on the internship/placement/role they are applying for. I would urge them to adopt a mindset of curiosity - the way they can get the most out of it is by learning as much as possible, especially about the things you'll do on a daily basis. Lastly, I would also highly recommend getting to know your intake (i.e., other interns that came into the company with you)
