Overview
As I prepared a workbook for an audit, I devoted a lot of effort to using Excel. Other interns as well as current trainees could be interacted with on a regular basis. A two-night stay at a hotel in London and a two-night stay in Warwick were part of the first weeks instruction. As a result, we spent time working on a new audit every week to get a taste of the various industries the firm serves.
Skills
For auditing, Excel proficiency is crucial. But my Excel abilities weren't particularly strong when I started the internship. Nevertheless, during the internship, I picked up a lot of new tricks and was taught a lot of new approaches. Listening to instructions on how to perform jobs that I have never done before has also helped me improve my communication abilities. Undoubtedly, one of the skills I have acquired is the ability to ask the proper questions and articulate my questions.
Responsibilities
I did not spend the majority of the internship concentrating on tasks that were crucial. Interns are not typically given much responsibility. However, after my partner shadowing day, I was invited on a call with a customer. In spite of this, I was only required to listen to the call and not participate. Spreadsheet filling is the majority of daily work, hence there is little accountability. Only more senior professionals often receive additional responsibility in the audit sector.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of assistance throughout the internship. There was always someone to ask if I had a question. I might have to wait for help if the team I was working on was busy, which is understandable, but eventually someone would find time to assist me. There was never any pressure to refrain from asking "silly questions," and everyone was always willing to assist. I occasionally struggled with a lack of instruction and comprehension of what I was doing, but this was primarily because the internship is so brief.
Culture
BDO has a highly friendly organisational culture. Everyone is eager to assist. There certainly appear to be a significant hierarchy at the company, yet everyone feels welcome there. Additionally, BDO is a remarkably social company and provides a competitive work/life balance. The company also sponsored numerous social events during the first week of our internship, including paying for Four hotel nights. I have spoken to a lot of the current trainees, and they all agreed with me and had positive things to say about the atmosphere at BDO.
Your Impressions
I have generally liked my placement at BDO. I had many opportunity to meet with existing trainees and occasionally more senior staff members, which gave me information about a career in audit. The partner shadowing day, which offered me a greater perspective on audit, was quite enjoyable for me. Even while the work was occasionally interesting, this was frequently because I had no idea how to execute the duties, thus an intern will typically be assigned easy projects.
Yes
I would without a doubt advise an internship with BDO. The company has a terrific social atmosphere, which extends to interns as well. A partner shadowing day is one of the rare possibilities that competing internships will give. At the conclusion of the internship, there is also a chance to land a graduate training contract, which is a fantastic chance to enhance your career. Even though the application procedure takes some time, it is definitely worthwhile.
