The Role
Having heard good things about the firm before I went my expectations were high but the week really was brilliant. The work I did was varied and interesting, everyone I met was friendly and had time for me and I left knowing that it is where I want to work!
As a vac schemer I don't think it will ever be possible to put a 10 here after only a week but it was very close to that. Everyone was so easy to get on with and they made time for you at both a professional and personal level.
I definitely think that I got lucky with my supervisor and I think that its always going to vary depending on the department you are in and how busy they are at the time. With my supervisor, however, he always had the time to guide me on what to do, making sure that I was always busy but that I was getting the support that I need in terms of finding the answers and also enjoying my week in the department.
I always had something to do but it never felt overloaded or unable to cope. I think that this was linked to the fact that people in my department were always on hand to help out when I needed. If I was being honest then I would say they could have made me sweat a little bit more!
The work I was given mattered which made feel like was actually making difference while obviously never being something that was beyond my expected abilities at this stage.
More than any kind of placement or work experience I have done before I really felt that I came away with new skills. I definitely got a better understanding of commercial awareness and professionalism. I think that while courses such as law, the GDL, the LPC etc are of course important, it is at vac schemes such as this you get the best understanding of what it means to wok in law and what is expected of you.
The Company
I was in corporate so I was never expected the department to be all jokes and laughs because of the nature of their work. However at Walker Morris I really felt a part of team that got on with each other and who were always willing to help each other. This feeling extended beyond my department and there was never a point where I felt anything less then just another member of the team.
The placement was extremely well structured. We got a really good amount of time in our departments to see how everything operated but then it was also well broken by assessments with the other vac schemers. They also made sure that we had plenty of time to meet and chat with the trainees, who always made the effort to come along and talk to us, even those who were currently on secondment.
Obviously as vac schemers there's only so much that any firm would invest in us and I would not expect much until of course you have a training contract secured. The most important thing that Walker Morris invested, at this stage, though was time. It was extremely rare that someone was to busy to talk to you and answer questions and for me that was what really stood out.

I honestly don't know and considering I only finished it the day before filling this out, I wouldn't expect to know for a few weeks yet. However I do know that its a firm that I definitely want to work for.
The Culture
We all got on very well, taking lunches together and going for drinks the evening. The fact that everyone was so amicable makes it that much harder to know whether I have a chance a job at the firm or not!
Although the bars we tended to go to were pricier than some in Leeds, its far superior then when you compare it to working in London.
I already knew Leeds had a great social scene and night life and the vac scheme expanded that knowledge
We had a couple of nights out with the trainees which were both great
