Overview
I was working with the Data Science team working on a ML project. My day involved programming and researching my data, trying to implement my ML model and improve its metrics. Other activities involved the Charity Challenge, so we had a day of volunteering and several BBQs.
Skills
Yes, I have significantly developed my technical skills in areas such as: EDA, ML modelling and theory, Data prep, SQL. I have also developed soft skills through interacting with my team, manager, and charity group. Soft skills such as: communication, teamwork, collaboration, agility, presenting skills, etc.
Responsibilities
I would say I was given a decent amount of responsibility. It was a fun challenge to work on the ML project by myself, if not a little daunting. I hope that the findings from my project will actually be used by my team at a later date but I'm not sure if that'll be the case. I suppose the answer to that is the answer to how much responsibility I was given.
Support & Guidance
I received an incredible amount of help in technical areas. My entire team was very knowledgeable and always happy to help and answer my questions. This lead to me learning a lot.
Culture
The culture and atmosphere was very friendly. Before coming I was scared of going into a corporate dynamic, but everyone I have interacted with has been super friendly. It has also been nice that I have felt equal to others despite being an intern.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed myself. My favourite aspect was certainly the technical aspects of my work and developing in these areas. The only part I found to be a little bit of a struggle was the charity challenge, I found that they placed a lot of pressure on us for this, and expected us to achieve quite a lot in such a short time frame.
Yes
I would say that there is no need to be nervous, everyone is friendly and approachable. I would also say try and make the most of the opportunities available for the 9 weeks, and if possible try and find out what you are going to be up to before your first day, so you can have a "warm start" to work.
