Overview
I worked in the Nucleus design system team; responsible for maintaining, updating, and improving our tools which are used by our designers and developers. Our day-to-day consisted of stand-ups, programming, and intermittent meetings, drop-ins, and releases.
Skills
I have learnt various new technologies and services; as well as developed my proficiency in programming languages. For example, I was aware of both Cloudflare and GitHub actions, however, throughout this internship I had learnt exactly how to use them to streamline deployments. Additionally, I developed my interpersonal skills greatly due to the nature of product engineers having to interact with their team, and other teams - understanding their wants and needs.
Responsibilities
I was given great responsibility; far more than I would have imagined going in. I was responsible for creating and completing my own tickets, organising code reviews, configuring workflows, deploying releases, and had access to all of our services - which provided me with more responsibility and ability (allowing me to practically take on any work my manager and I deemed appropriate).
Support & Guidance
I received the perfect amount of support and guidance. I wasn't handed everything on a silver platter, but I was able to seek help and guidance when needed. This really helped me grow as a young professional as I had to understand and explore the business around me.
Culture
It was great; I was well respected, never once feeling like I was 'lesser', and had a very healthy relationship with my manager, team members, and the greater colleague network.
Your Impressions
I loved it! I cannot stress just how imperative this was for my development. The work was enjoyable, challenging, and offered so much growth. Additionally, there was a lot of group-working with other business units; offering great insights into the wider business.
Yes
Jump in head first! You are well supported, well equipped, and well respected. Embracing the experience will benefit you beyond belief.
