Overview
I worked on a project looking at how we could increase the number of female engineers in British Gas through work experience placements. Over the 9 weeks I delivered a program proposal for a work experience placement to run the following year. This involved conducting my own research and meeting with stakeholders to understand the barriers to bringing work experience pupils into the business. I had to secure the capacity of stakeholders for the scheme
Skills
I have developed my networking skills as my role has required me to build a network of stakeholders. I have also been encouraged to build my own network of connections across the business to understand the responsibilities of each business unit and where my skills lie. Communication - professional and adaptable communication by negotiating with stakeholders
Responsibilities
Yes, whilst my manager was always on hand should I have needed support I was given the independence to take my project in my own direction. My manager encouraged me to work proactively and to resolve issues myself
Support & Guidance
We had a week long induction where we were introduced to our stream GTMs, and the early careers team. Afterwards I had twice weekly meetings with my manager, weekly meetings with the other BM interns and stream leads. Across the company colleagues were always very willing to help and support whenever I asked
Culture
The working culture was very welcoming and championed personal development. I always felt that people wanted me to succeed and generally went out of their way to improve my experience. I got the opportunity to meet and talk with a number of senior leaders. Although there is a clear line of upwards progression in the business structure, I found that senior colleagues were equally willing to offer their support and valued our input
Your Impressions
I loved my internship. It was an insightful and fulfilling experience. It was a definite learning curve, and I feel I have taken away multiple points of professional development but I was supported along the way.
Yes
The business management stream is a unique opportunity that offers a wide range of placement opportunities. It is a great way to expand your professional skills and knowledge and to find out where your skills and interest lie. You can carve your own career path
