Overview
Working on a frontend team, we had a daily stand up meeting as they employed an Agile methdology, specifically Kanban. As a product engineer, we would look at the design system and look to improve or implement new features. These would be converted into tickets which would then be prioritised and placed onto the kanban board which is hosted on GitHub.
Skills
I have learnt many skills during this time. I now have experience with node.js, TS, Lit framework, design systems, git/GitHub. Before coming onto this placement, my knowledge of frontend in general was very limited but this placement has enhanced my skills greatly.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility and I actually published an extension on VSCode, which is something I did not think I would do. I completed real work in this placement and it was work that a normal engineer would take on. You also get to pick what you would like to work on which was very nice as I picked something that interested me the most.
Support & Guidance
I had lots of guidance and help from my line manager who was also my mentor throughout the placement, I am very grateful to him for taking the time to explain concepts to me and helping me when I was stuck or moving along my project. Help was always there when needed.
Culture
The atmosphere is very relaxed and professional. The dress is smart casual so not everyone is walking around in a suit which gives a much more relaxed feeling. Everyone is very polite and friendly and willing to help people out. Not once did I feel alienated or looked down on for being an intern. It was very enjoyable.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement very much and I am very happy that I accepted it. My professional experience as a software engineer has increased dramatically. YMMV as it may depend what team you go into but the Nucleus team are fantastic. I would recommend this placement to anyone.
Yes
Expect a large workload but enjoy yourself, that's what it is there for. You should never have to work in your own time but at the same time, you won't have much free time in your work day, which is how it should be. It's also great for the experience as a software engineer.
