Overview
I worked within the energy assets team where I worked on a project about the optimisation of an energy park. On a day to day basis I looked at prediction data on excel and modelled different energy assets using this data. I created a technical model and a cashflow on excel detailing when each asset should be turned on to maximise revenue. My role heavily involved upskilling in excel and the energy market.
Skills
I have massively improved my digital skills through using excel and PowerPoint a lot over the placement. I have developed my presenting skills as we get the chance to do a presentation to all the other interns and managers talking about the work we completed over the placement. I have improved my time management skills, confidence, and my communication skills as I worked in a team over my whole project.
Responsibilities
I was in a team of four interns and we were given our own project which involved a high level of responsibility. Once we leave the internship, our project is being taken on by the Centrica energy assets team and they will be building on the model we have made, which made my project a lot more meaningful. I was the only analyst on my team so I had a lot of responsibility.
Support & Guidance
My team was quite hands off so I often had to be quite proactive and reach out whenever I needed support, however help was always there when I needed it. I had daily meetings with my whole team where I could ask any questions and I met with my manager in person at least once a week. Unfortunately, my program 'buddy' left the company during my internship so I didn't receive support from her.
Culture
The company culture is amazing. Everyone is so enthusiastic to help and support you even if you don't work directly with them. We have the opportunity to meet people from all levels of the company including the CEO. All the other summer placements, as well as the other employees, make the work environment really enjoyable. I loved coming into the office and if I lived closer I would have come everyday.
Your Impressions
I really loved my internship and I'm so glad I spent my summer doing something interesting and rewarding. The other summer placements really make the experience as there are around 60 interns which makes the work environment so enjoyable and I will be keeping in touch with a lot of them. I would definitely recommend this placement to anyone looking for a great summer where you learn a lot about a fascinating industry.
Yes
I would say do some research about the energy industry prior to applying and get an idea of some areas you might want to work in. For example I was really interested in renewables which I told them so I was placed on the energy assets team which I found so interesting. Do a lot of research about the company beforehand to give you the best chance.
