Overview
Your responsibilities will alter depending on whether you work on a sales, trading, or structuring desk. All teams are expected to participate in daily calls pertinent to the division and to take notes. There are more presentations and trade idea/project based responsibilities in sales. There are usually trade concepts, but there are also some technical tasks. Structuring is very centered around projects, with some items requiring excel/coding expertise. Along with employment, there is a lot of networking.
Skills
My knowledge of markets has increased dramatically from where it was before. In addition to being able to distil this information into digestible chunks, I feel more secure in generating opinions about current events in the globe and analysing their impact on the market. I have greatly increased the scope of my technical understanding of structured products and their derivatives. Exposure to presentations improves their capacity to conduct speeches in front of groups of people as well as their public speaking and delivery talents.
Responsibilities
This will differ according on the desk; for certain desks, interns generate projects that will be given to clients or utilised as a model. Morning wraps that summarise the major news stories from the previous day and how they affected the markets must frequently be sent out. The broader teams may also be asked for their opinions on these wraps. Since interns cannot actually trade, trading desks naturally have less intern "obligation," yet there is effort made to make trade simulations exciting.
Support & Guidance
Through the programme, we were assigned companions who were there to support us with any issues we had, whether they were more technical or focused on our personal growth. In general, there is good support given to interns even from desks that are not participating in the internship, helping to support interns and creating an environment that allows people to ask questions and explore ideas beyond what is necessary. Senior management is also very receptive to interns who reach out and ask for advice.
Culture
People are typically quite helpful and willing to take on mentorship type responsibilities, which contributes to the cultures overall positivity towards progress and education. The mood may vary depending on the desk and how busy it is, but the internship teaches you how to find time and get things done in spite of these challenges. Depending on which division one works in, the workplace atmosphere may vary, but it is often supportive and uplifting. Great in general
Your Impressions
It was an amazing opportunity and a significant learning curve. The contacts I built with the teams and the interns were excellent and have really improved my understanding of the business and certain desks. I thought the work was of a good level of difficulty, and the experience was one that I would gladly repeat if given the chance. Overall exceeded my expectations, and I would encourage others to give it a shot if they can.
Yes
If I had any advice, it would be to catch up on the fascinating developments happening in the industry and attempt to understand why you want to find employment in the division you are applying for. Utilise the knowledge on the corporate website to prepare for interviews, as well as for the technical requirements for the job you are applying for. Recognise your skill set and justify its applicability to the position you're seeking for.
