Overview
I got involved in two other projects: a "financial literacy club" and a presentation that offered practical ideas for boosting a local charity's participation on social media. The six-week financial literacy club teaches ninth through eleventh graders about the basics of finance in a local elementary school. My day lasts eight hours, although because of tube timetables, I usually work from 9.15 am to 5.15 pm. Work from home is an option at Visa every two weeks for 5–10 days; my team works remotely on Mondays and Fridays.
Skills
I was given a fantastic opportunity to develop new abilities. These include: -> Confidence: I have improved my ability to include empathy, assertion, and storytelling into my communications and have learned how to do so in a variety of contexts (big and small, more senior employees, children, known colleagues, and "unknown" colleagues). By having the chance to MC meetings, present in front of people, and speak during meetings, I have practically improved on this. -> Networking: Building on my confidence, I have developed the capacity to approach people from different departments and levels of seniority in order to learn more about their careers and discover new job chances.
Responsibilities
While I did not have a lot of direct responsibility, aside from running a few meetings, I have actively sought out situations that have given me more authority. These include the previously discussed financial literacy club project. My boss was quite keen that I follow through with my inquiry, modify my job to match my goals, and step outside of my comfort zone. These have helped me develop as a leader and a team player.
Support & Guidance
From the very beginning of the application process, before I began the internship, and during the entire programme, I had an extraordinary amount of support. This support came in a variety of forms, including weekly meetings and an open line of communication with my manager and buddy, the chance to participate in a small-group mentoring programme, and networking with other leads and managers throughout the company who provided suggestions on how to pick up new skills that will be helpful when I start working as a graduate after I finish my studies.
Culture
Visa has a corporate culture and environment unlike any other organisation I have ever encountered. Every single person I have encountered throughout the few months I have worked here has been nothing but nice, respectful, and supportive. This is true of the security, hospitality, and housekeeping employees as well, which speaks to a business that appears to respect people no matter their position, upbringing, or differences. Hard work, fostering relationships, and helping one another are values held by the organisation.
Your Impressions
I am beyond happy to endorse it because I have greatly enjoyed my internship with the Visa People Team. Since I come from a completely different family than most people, I was initially a little hesitant to enter the corporate world. However, with this particular company, I have found it to be a very friendly environment. Those who have questions about whether to apply should do so since they might be as shocked as I was.
Yes
I would advise being authentic in your application because Visa values diversity in all its forms, unlike some employers who might want to hire a particular "type" of person. The application process may appear intimidating at first because there are so many procedures, but if you remain organised and motivated (and keep in mind that there is a great opportunity at the end of it), everything will go according to plan. It offers excellent graduate prospects and advantages, making it potentially a long-term investment (or not, it is up to you!).
