Overview
Updated brochure on missile functional architecture by using power point and IBM Rhapsody, took part in international stakeholder meetings to get these changes approved and released. Also used IBM Rhapsody to mock-up a generic model missile and experimented with executable models as a first step in making the use executable models more common within the company. Wrote up a report to document my work to be used in further research in to executable models. Full training was provided for all of this work.
Skills
Developed presentation and organisation skills. Learnt how to use IBM Rhapsody and Ecslipse; this involved becoming familiar with SysML and MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering).
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given long-term (10 weeks worth) projects which were important to the business and allowed to suggest changes/improvements to the topics I was working on based on my experience with the work by a certain point. The work was meaningful and made an impact from what I could tell.
Support & Guidance
Great support and guidance, my team were always willing to help and patient when teaching me new skills. I always felt I could seek out help with senior employees and that they were more than happy to set aside time for me. Unfortunately the regular training courses for the applications I was using don't run during the summer and other resources for full-time employees are also unavailable for summer interns.
Culture
Good company culture. Everyone is supportive no matter what stage of your career you are at and the whole business is invested in your career growth. Very easy to maintain a work-life balance with plenty of benefits and a great team dynamic. Friendly and inviting atmosphere.
Your Impressions
I had an enjoyable placement. Daily tasks were well planned out before being assigned to me, my team always made efforts to include me when possible in socialising. I was given an appropriate level of responsibility and provided a lot of supprt for the projects I was assigned.
