Overview
I'm a software development intern working on a web-development project. Every morning, we have a 15 minute stand up with the rest of the team - including 5 other interns and our mentor. At stand up, we discuss the progress we've made on the previous day and what we plan to do on that day, as well as any issues we've encountered. The rest of the day is spent working on tickets.
Skills
There are many skills that I gained from this internship, including technical skills such as writing code in typescript, react and next, as well as using technologies like git. I also learnt to do pair programming and code reviews!
Responsibilities
Not really. I was given responsibility for completing my bits of the project, but because we had stand ups every morning, I was never in a position where I had too much responsibility or couldn't reach out for help.
Support & Guidance
A lot. I had two meetings every week - one with my mentor and another with my line manager - which gave a lot of support. The line manager for our team was also always present and very helpful, providing just enough guidance that I could work through things without receiving too much help.
Culture
It was great! The atmosphere is completely different from what I initially expected. People in the office are all very welcoming and fun. A week in and I already felt very comfortable with a lot of them! Work-life balance is highly encouraged in the office, and there are lots of fun activities going on every week like crafts club, badminton, games night etc.!
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship here, and wish it was longer than 2 months!! Not only did I gain a lot of experience and skills, I also picked up some random tricks like speed cubing and ping pong! This internship definitely made me consider joining the company in the future!
Yes
Focus on soft skills and general attitude to life at interviews!
