Overview
I worked in the Actuarial and Investment consulting teams, this involved a huge range of work including some technical calculations, general monitoring and consulting with clients, creating and drafting reports and many more. There was also a large element of training and assessments spread throughout the internship as well.
Skills
Absolutely, I had never been exposed to working within pensions before so everything I have done has been new which has enabled me to develop lots of skills. This has included technical mathematical skills using excel and also general written skills, conveying messages in a concise understandable way. It has also allowed me to develop general existing skills like team-work, communication and work ethic.
Responsibilities
Yes, there was a lot of responsibility given to us and freedom when we were given work. Everything gets checked but initially most of the work I completed was blank to start with which made me feel needed and responsible. There was a good system where most people would go over all work you have completed, allowing more feedback and improvements.
Support & Guidance
The support was very high, we were given two mentors in the separate teams we worked in and had regular catch ups (every 2 weeks) to go over things and see if we needed any help. We also had supervisors who oversaw the internship and provided help and support if needed. Because of the large graduate proportion here there also was a good informal support system throughout.
Culture
The company has a really good culture and the atmosphere was really welcoming for a new joiner. I didn't feel bad to ask questions or if I struggled with work, everyone was really approachable. There is also a good social side with lots of opportunities to see colleagues outside of the office.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed my internship. I have found it extremely valuable for the future and it has taught a bunch of new skills. It has been a really good place to start working at and I highly recommend it.
Yes
I have no general advice, the application process is very generic in terms of internships so researching the firm and industry is valuable.
