Overview
I worked with a database team on short term action plans, focusing on the UI and how it linked to the backend. I used React JS to update an existing website's functionality. I ensured I attended the daily meetings and on occasion, intern events
Skills
My React skills have greatly improved. I also got to reading 'Design for Hackers', which gave me a much better insight into UI/UX design. Most of all, as this was my first internship, I gained an understanding of what it is like to work in a team where everyone has a different skillset. I spoke to everyone on my team multiple times for different things as they had varied strengths.
Responsibilities
Yes, I would say that since I was working on a project that was going to be deployed and released to the public in the near future, I felt a strong sense of responsibility in ensuring I maintained the codebase and that my work was to a certain standard.
Support & Guidance
When I asked for assistance from my team I almost always received it. It was difficult to fully onboard due to access issues, so it would've been useful to get that sorted in early stages so I could spend more time producing meaningful work.
Culture
The culture was very inclusive and inviting. I was able to leave the workplace once my tasks for the day were complete and all my teammates made time to work with me knowing I was an intern. I liked that my work was mostly independent and that I was the only intern on the team.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. I gained valuable life and career skills in my first internship that I will carry with me in future roles. I am grateful for the team I was placed in and that JP Morgan was able to be flexible with the work I was given in order to ensure it aligned with my religious beliefs.
Yes
Make the most of every opportunity. Chase lots of people up to get your access sorted as soon as possible so you can get to working on an actual project. Ensure you talk to your team and communicate any difficulties.
