Overview
I work with the project management team on projects around GSK. There are always different tasks that are being completed on a regular basis, I was able to get some experience working on documentation that is required before construction. I also used applications such PowerBI on a small project that I worked on.
Skills
I have been able to develop my Excel skills and develop my understanding of drawings made on AutoCAD which is an important skill to have as a part of my degree. I also learnt how to use new applications such as PowerBI to create heatmaps.
Responsibilities
I have been given responsibility and felt as if my work did make an impact towards the final product. I was given small tasks to complete for various projects. For example, making an Excel spreadsheet to calculate the carbon emissions, etc. I was also given the responsibility of speaking to the sub contractors for one of the projects to discuss scaffolding costs, risk assessment method statements etc.
Support & Guidance
I was given a lot of support from my line manager and the other project managers. I went for site visits to see the projects that the project managers were working on, I was given guidance on how to complete the tasks I was given. For one of the tasks I was completing for one of the GSK stream leads, I was given a lot of support from Mace's project controls team.
Culture
Everyone was very friendly and always looked out for me. If I didn't understand something, they were always willing to help. The team worked well together, the general atmosphere at work was good.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my time at Mace, I was able to develop my skills and pick up new skills over my summer placement. I got an insight into project management and the construction industry which will help me when making career decisions in the future after university.
