Overview
Communicating with engineers and getting them involved with the project. Attending meetings with the teams working on a project and keeping them on track. Updating project plans and documentation. Managing deadlines. Keeping people informed. Managing the progress on the project and ensuring that work is being prioritised and completed and involving any required individuals. Managing third party vendors.
Skills
I learnt how to work as part of an organisation: using teams, managing calendars and working with colleagues. I learnt about the lifecycle of technology projects, from when they are devised based on business goals to their design and then development, testing and deployment. I also got to learn about organisational structure: the different work levels, how information is exchanged between levels and how people are managed.
Responsibilities
I was put on a project which was fairly important and later in the internship it did start to become quite difficult to manage with lots of people involved. I don't think all of my time was used effectively; I didn't have many other tasks to work on.
Support & Guidance
Initially, very little but it did get better later on when I was transferred to a new line manager. Everyone on my team were very busy so didn't make much time for me.
Culture
Very friendly and welcoming. Starting a new job is always intimidating but it could have been a lot worse if it wasn't so easy to talk to other people.
Your Impressions
It had it's ups and downs. I felt most satisfied when I was working on meaningful tasks but other days I would find myself with very little to do and my line manager didn't have anymore work for me than what was initially set.
Yes
Be assertive to your line manager and make sure you get a substantial amount of time with them each week. Speak up if you think you don't have enough work. Try to get as much information about the department and current projects as early on as possible.
