Overview
My role was to optimise and improve the effluent system at Port Talbot and Llanwern. This involved taking effluent samples at different works areas, mapping out the different inlets and outlets with drawing analysis and SME discussion, analysis lab data to identify areas for improvement and discussing with key stakeholders to improve the system.
Skills
The main skills developed throughout my placement include interpersonal skills such as communication and time management to ensure projects are completed within the specified timescales and results are communicated to the key stakeholders. Other skills developed include technical skills such as critical analysis and development of proficiency in Microsoft Visio and Excel.
Responsibilities
During my placement I was given a lot of responsibility as I was put in charge of one of the annual plan projects which contribute to the goals assessed at the end of each financial year. This responsibility was good to have as it felt like my contribution to the company would be heavily valued.
Support & Guidance
During my placement there was plenty of guidance and support when I requested through the team surrounding me and through my line manager through monthly 1 to 1s. I was able to easily communicate and contact my line manager when required but also was given a lot of autonomy when it came to completing my projects which was good as it allowed plenty of freedom.
Culture
The company culture is generally pretty positive especially within the team I was in. Everyone was friendly and welcoming in the team and allowed me to settle into the role well. Most people are open to challenge and any questions are welcomed to deepen your understanding.
Your Impressions
Overall I enjoyed my placement and working at Tata with the amount of learning and technical development given, the welcoming team, level of responsibility within the team and CPD opportunities to improve your personal career too. One negative about being based in Port Talbot is the location, it is a bit far from most places and is not the most liveliest of places even if you decide to live in Swansea.
