Overview
Take work delegated to you by other colleagues, e.g. reviewing pension calculations or doing them yourself. At the start, training sessions and worksheets had to be completed before actual work was started. Occasionally attend client meetings, either in-person or online. Organise and attend social events, games, and charity events for/within the office. Individual and group presentation work.
Skills
Developed professional communication both when speaking to other colleagues and to clients. Greatly improved presentation skills by preparing and performing in a professional but friendly environment. Learned plenty about pensions and other actuarial skills and programmes used. Improved organisational skills by planning meetings, delegating time to certain tasks throughout the day, and organised other people when leading certain tasks.
Responsibilities
Yes, there was plenty of responsibility given, although the majority was in the second half of the internship when training was completed. Calculating pensions for real people/clients was something we frequently did, as well as updating sites specific to the company. Organising socials, presentations, and newsletters was also for us to do on top of this, and was almost entirely down to interns.
Support & Guidance
Plenty of support was available if you were to ask for it, however otherwise you would usually be given fairly basic instructions (depending on the person helping you), though I think this is the best way to do things. At the start there was plenty of guidance during training.
Culture
The culture and atmosphere was great, everyone was extremely friendly and the atmosphere not too formal. The people were very diverse, welcoming, and understanding.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the internship. I didn't expect the friendliness of everyone in the office, or the fact that we'd be brought to important client meetings relatively early in our time there. Overall an extremely interesting experience that has undoubtedly improved my professional skills in presenting, communicating, and organisation.
Yes
Don't feel daunted by the place - everyone is very friendly and understanding and you'll feel right at home in under a week.
