Overview
As an actuarial intern you are responsible for assisting both the graduates and qualified actuaries with any of the projects they are working on. Most projects involve collating and analyzing data to get a better understanding of the insurance market which is then used to advise clients.
Skills
I have definitely learnt some of the basic actuarial techniques such as how to calculate frequency/severity, reserving, pricing, burn costs. I have developed by ability to navigate through excel whilst also improving my knowledge of Insurance jargon. With regards to more soft skills, I have developed by ability to network; both face to face and through social media.
Responsibilities
Its hard to say whether I was given much responsibility as there is no gauge or metric for me to compare the level of responsibility I was given with the usual level of responsibility that is given to any intern. That being said, I was given tasks that assisted clients in their decision making, come renewal season.
Support & Guidance
There was always an opportunity for me to reach out to more senior employees and get their advice on the tasks I was working on. There was also a more formal mentoring program in place; I had a dedicated manager and connector who helped ease me into the culture whilst also giving constant support through ought the internship.
Culture
I would say that Aon has a very warm social culture; there is a lot of emphasis put on establishing strong relationships with both clients and those who work at the company. There are many socials that take place which is always a good way to build your network.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship experience at Aon
Yes
Understand that Aon looks at the whole picture when hiring someone. They look at who you are and what makes you stand out (whether that be your exceptional social or problem solving skills). On top of this they also value results; have a good academic track record + extracurricular actions that are directly relevant to the industry you are applying in, even if it is something as simple as reading the news.
