    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The part I enjoyed the most this year was being an IBMer as it's a great company to work for and very helpful people all around you. It may seem daunting to work for IBM to many but the experience after you are here is completely the opposite. It is as good or I'd say better than any smaller company when it comes to communication between employees and you will definitely have a great social life. However, the only bit I did not enjoy was my job in itself. I was given a lot of responsibilities but it was not the kind of job I would want to do ever again.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt really valued as I was given a lot of responsibilities and opportunities to keep my point of view. I was given the space to work in my own way and was often asked to take decisions. However, it may completely depend on the role you are offered.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had no complaints at all in this department. IBM is full of kind and helpful people and they really go out of their way to help newbies. I was given a lot of support and direction by my manager and my team.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It again depends on the role you get offered but I was really busy throughout the year - more than I ever expected TBH. It has it's pros and cons but it wasn't great to see my colleagues having a gala time with a perfect work balance.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a high level of responsibility and again much more than I ever thought I'll get. It was fun and challenging at the same time and it kept me highly motivated knowing that a lot depends on the work I do.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I can truly say I've learned skills for life! I have had a 100% increase in my skills level. From time management to dealing with deadlines, good communication skills, writing skills, decision making and managing work-life balance, my year at IBM has taught me a lot and I'm sure it will help me a great deal in my next year at uni. Working for IBM is an amazing experience all together!! A scary but great roller coaster ride :-)

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • We had great fun working in IBM Warwick as the placement students group was quite close and friendly. We were a group of 15 ITs and used to enjoy most evening and weekends. I ironically had a better social life than university and I think the biggest factor is that you don't have to do anything after 5:30 - you're tension free and can simply relax the whole evening and weekends, off course if you don't have an overload of work, which I sometimes did :-/

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was quite well organized. We always knew where and when we had to be and what was expected of us. The 2 induction days at the beginning were quite helpful as well. Though, things could have been better in some ways.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • If it did not involve money, I was helped in my training and development.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely apply back to IBM as it's a great company to work for.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It was perfect! tough again it depends which location you are based in and what kind of people are appointed that year :D I was well lucky to have our group that had the most amazing people I've ever met but have not heard the same for other IBM locations.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • This was one advantage of being in IBM Warwick. We had little rent and minimal travel costs - I saved quite a lot this year!

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • We just have one club here - Smack and that's where we have spent most of our nights. Though Coventry and Birmingham are quite close so we have been there for a couple of nights. There are many bars around the area and they have cheap drinks. Overall we had good fun and the fact that there is only one club did not make much of a difference.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • This is one disadvantage of being in Warwick. As the prime IBM locations are down south in London and Portsmouth, the ITs there had many more opportunities outside work but in general IBM can the most exciting place to work for as it has endless exciting opportunities outside work which also includes working in Wimbledon!!
