Overview
Within my role, each day is never the same. However, it mainly consists of onboarding new colleagues, collecting their documentation and making sure they're welcomed into the business. I also process different HR changes such as transfers, promotions, leavers and maternity leave. Another part of my week is to work through our team inbox to answer any queries that colleagues and line managers will have.
Skills
I've developed many useful skills across my placement. Although I do Business with HR at Uni, my course involves a lot of theory, but my placement has allowed me to see how this put in place in an organisation - I feel that I have learnt a lot of HR skills that I wouldn't have necessarily gained through the theory at Uni. I've also learned so many skills such as communicating in a professional environment, presentation skills etc.
Responsibilities
Yes definitely! Throughout my placement, I was given the same responsibilities as the rest of my team and was never made to feel like I was just a placement student. I was responsible for my own workload and managed this myself, however we communicated as a team to make sure no one had too much on at one time.
Support & Guidance
There was never a time where I didn't have someone to speak to if I needed anything. My line manager was/is very supportive and if I ever had an issue, I have no doubt that I couldn't speak to her. If I ever had any questions about work or just in general, my team were always there to help or jump on a call to work through things. I also had a mentor and we had bi-weekly meetings to talk about work, Uni and careers but also for anything outside of work and just general conversation. The Early Talent team were also there to support us with our placements and anything to do with Uni.
Culture
The company has such a great culture and you are welcomed from your first day. Within our wider HR team, everyone was so lovely and it felt very welcoming. I have a great team that has a fantastic culture. You also begin your placement year with the Early Talent team with allowed us to meet all the other placement students, apprentices and grads, which was great to feel like you had other people there who were in the same situation as yourself.
Your Impressions
I've loved my placement year and I am so glad that I chose to do one. Not only have I developed skills that I wouldn't have been able to gain at Uni, but I have developed so much personally. My team have been so supportive and I have met such great people throughout my wider team and within our Early Talent program. The society has such a great culture and is a fantastic place to work.
