Overview
I wrote bid content for tender submissions, specifically drafting and writing CVs from interviewing subject matter experts. I also had to look at our company's features and benefits of our construction services in order to identify key win themes to include throughout the content.
Skills
I learned how to write bidding content, which needed the appropriate amount of persuasiveness and needed a specific tone to replicate the brand's voice. I also learned how to conduct successful interviews as I interviewed over 10 project team members. Finally, I learned how to translate technical construction information into clear and concise writing so the client is able to understand.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given the responsibility to be the copywriter to write up bid CVs for two tender submissions.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of guidance from my Line Manager and the wider team, I was very fortunate to be able to ask everyone questions and feel confident that they would always help. However, I was supposed to receive a buddy, someone who would help me with queries that regarded topics outside of copywriting and about the general graduate scheme process, but I never had one. Even with my line manager contacting the team about this issues, I still didn't receive one. This buddy would've helped me with my end of placement presentation that would get me the graduate position, but I got no such guidance and did it all on my own.
Culture
The company culture was to accept and see the promise in everyone and I really felt this while I was there. Despite having no formal qualifications for my role, my line manager chose me because he saw something promising in my interview. But, I saw this reflected in other interns who were all given opportunities even without outstanding previous experience and connections, which is something I liked the most about this company. The general atmosphere was always friendly and approachable. Colleagues from other departments would frequently come over and introduce themselves, offer help and advice if I asked. Some colleagues from the marketing department, which I do not work in, even held team meetings with me to discuss their roles just because I said I was interested in their roles as a possible future career path.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement; it taught me a lot of things professionally and personally. The workload was never that heavy as they allowed me to grow and learn at a very soft and appropriate place to make sure it wasn't too overwhelming. My team was the best part of my job as they offered me so much advice and support. They made me feel like I was truly a part of the team and not just a temporary intern, which was lovely to experience.
Yes
I would tell others to ask and learn as many things as they can while they are on their placement, to truly take advantage of all of the information and support at hand. I have learnt so many skills, professional ones but also major soft skills, and now I no longer feel lost about my future career. Before this placement, I was unsure what path to take or where to start but the Mace team gave me opportunities I could never even dream of. One colleague, who was not my line manager, even volunteered to help coach me and give career and networking advice.
