Overview
Working to secure the email infrastructure and mail flow through the organisation. Daily tasks include working on BAU tasks and incidents, working on project work assigned to myself through the agile methodology, working towards my personal development objectives, attending meetings, self reflection and recording of what I have done that day, shadowing team members with their tasks, creating presentations and communicating with end users.
Skills
I have developed on my understanding of cyber security concepts through additional training and hands on experience applying the theory through practical hands on work. Additionally I have learned a significant amount into the specifics of email security and cyber security in industry. My soft skills have developed, including: communicating low level technical topics in higher level for non technical people to understand through giving presentations, communicating with end users across the organisation and networking with members of other teams and business areas.
Responsibilities
I was given responsibility to take on business as usual tasks and project work on my own after. However the team was always there to help and provide guidance and feedback on work before finishing. Alongside the work the team has been doing, I have had the opportunity to work on my own individual project independently and this has allowed me to go and ask the questions and find the answers myself and develop work I have been proud of.
Support & Guidance
Any questions I had were answered, the team has been great at supporting myself and my learning throughout the program. Everyone has been more than happy to help. At the beginning I got a lot of shadowing and run-throughs of tools and tasks that the team members take which helped catch me up to speed to start working on my own tasks and project work. When working on project work and tasks the team members are always there to support if I have questions.
Culture
I have really enjoyed it, my team is very close and collaborative and I have really liked that throughout the placement. There is a wide network of ex graduates and interns in the company who are always happy to connect and discuss their experience. I have reached out to many people across different teams in security and everyone has been happy to discuss any questions I had about their team, or their experience as a grad.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed every day of the placement and I would give it a 10/10 for enjoyment.
Yes
Be interested in what you are doing. It is important to want to learn and want to gain experience. If you have a genuine interest in what you are applying for and can demonstrate that- I think that is very useful.
