The Role
It was very good to get experience about the research that is done in the pharmaceutical sector. Made me re-consider my future career plans and I am definitely glad I did it.
My department was very friendly and helpful in answering all my questions..They were happy to help whenever any one of us was struggling
I was very lucky to have her as my supervisor and, in general, I think other students were happy with who they've got as a supervisor.
Sometimes I had truly nothing to do. But even that time can be used for reading papers, studying etc.
GSK is very organised with its IPs so you can be sure you will receive experience from all the meetings, presentations etc..nevertheless, bigger tasks are always supervised(if you re lucky enough to get some)
I must say that even though I study pharmacology I did not have to use any of my prior knowledge in my job (screening); however, you certainly do improve in calculating concentrations/dilutions and general lab skills...
The Company
The atmosphere was alright...Friendly but sometimes too loud (open plan office) and it was harder to concentrate...
Very well organised...IPs have a very good place in GSK..
There were lectures, trainings and other seminars students could attend plus it was no problem at all to organise a tour of any other lab...
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
very appealing..If you want to go into research in a big pharma company, benefits offered by GSK are very good!
The Culture
The Stevenage site has approx 150 students and they all live there because it's cheap so Friday/Saturday parties do take place.
Cost of living = cheap, cost of socialising = surprisingly expensive
just 1 club in stevenage unfortunately...nevertheless, London is not far away so an all-nighter in London is a must
generally, there are not many opportunities in stevenage apart from a pub..however, the GSK gym on site always offers some challenges etc...
