Overview
The week is split between sales and analytics departments, with 3 days in sales and 2 days in analytics. The days in sales consist of client outreach, team-specific projects and client meetings. This is done to keep clients engaged on the terminal and to train them on BBG tools. The days in analytics are training days, however the end goal of the analytics department at BBG is to respond to customer queries on the terminal, so the trainings focus on terminal use as well as broader financial knowledge.
Skills
The training sessions are quite useful to gain a deeper financial knowledge, especially if you have no previous finance background. If you already know some finance they initially may be quite easy but provide a nice refresher. There is the option and the tools available to also develop more quantitative skills, e.g. with a free datacamp access and free trainings on Linkedin, however this is not a part of the analytics program per se.
Responsibilities
As we are a large intern cohort, especially in the analytics department, we are given 4 projects to complete. They are an opportunity to have an impact however the responsibility they entail remains quite limited. As we are such a large group it may have been difficult for the interns to gain a lot of responsibility compared to departments that are smaller or with less interns. That being said, if you are very proactive you can gain more responsibilities within your team.
Support & Guidance
As there are so many interns the program is very well structured and interns receive a lot of guidance throughout the whole internship. We have several buddies/mentors within the company that are always very available and that actively check-in with us every week. We also have 2 managers which are also typically very invested in us having a good internship experience and in providing guidance. Overall the support provided was really excellent and great for a first internship experience
Culture
Bloomberg really advertises itself as a very inclusive company with a great culture and strong values of collaboration. After ten weeks here I can confidently say that they stand behind this completely. The large majority of employees, all the way up to very senior management, takes time for interns (e.g. we met Mike Bloomberg on our first day). They are also very committed to philanthropy and sustainability which is great. We had an intern day of service which was dedicated to volunteering.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my whole internship experience and would without a doubt recommend Bloomberg to anyone interested in joining. It is especially valuable in terms of exposure to company culture, networking with other interns and development of finance knowledge. The work is structured and we receive a lot of guidance as well as many great events throughout the summer. I am extremely happy to have interned here and I think it is a great place especially for a first job experience
