Overview
Working with other interns and mentors on an internal bridge design competition (roughly 50% of time) Working with an engineer on tasks for real engineering projects, which could mean a variety of things from modelling, reading legislation, performing stress calculations using excel etc.
Skills
Yes, I have learned to use a lot of new software including MIDAS, google sketchup and TEDDs.
Responsibilities
Some responsibility, there was always someone on hand to help with any problems that I had but it was basically up to me to make sure I did things correctly and on time.
Support & Guidance
Lots, my line manager worked right next to me so I was able to ask him about anything at all and he was happy to help me out,
Culture
Lovely, I was working in a fairly small team which was very close knit, I also got the opportunity to talk to people in the office from other teams and they were all very welcoming and interesting to speak with.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it very much, great balance between having enough work to keep me busy and not constantly worrying about meeting deadlines. The work was rewarding and not too repetitive so I wouldn't really say there was anything that I disliked.
Yes
Talk to as many people as possible, you will be surprised at how different everyone's job is. Be open with what you do and don't understand because it's a great opportunity to fill gaps in your knowledge.
