Overview
On a day-to-day basis, my role mainly involved working on some outcomes related to SRE-type technologies (for me this was building a registry in Terraform, but other outcomes are related to Ansible, Kubernetes, etc.). I also had the chance to observe and participate in some incident management, where I could see production issues in action.
Skills
I've learned many new skills, such as Terraform and Kubernetes, and have greatly extended my knowledge of AWS technologies.
Responsibilities
Yes. I was given one whole outcome to plan out and manage, and was the main developer of an entirely different internal product. I was also given the support I needed to take up those responsibilities, though, so it was a perfect amount of responsibility.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance - I was assigned a manager, a non-technical mentor, and a technical mentor (they called the mentors buddies, and they provided a lot of day-to-day support).
Culture
The catchphrase of Duo, as it relates to company culture is "kinder than necessary", and everyone I spoke to at the company agrees. Everyone goes out of their way to be helpful. Otherwise, it is also quite chill - people are understanding and there isn't a high degree of pressure in the atmosphere. When things go wrong, no one gets blamed as well.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship very much! It was eye-opening - I learned so many different things. I also had a great manager, as well as some very good mentors, to guide me throughout the process.
Yes
It sometimes can be a little frustrating at the start to get everything set up, but just bear with it, and you should be set up with everything in less than two weeks.
