Overview
My role involves working as part of different teams to consult on internal projects within the company. I have daily meetings going through tasks I have completed, offering solutions to new problems and discussing approaches. My role is very varied so one day I could be writing a report on transport data and the next I could be programming with python.
Skills
I have learnt a lot about AI and machine learning, specifically how to create a natural language processor. Whilst learning this, I was able to improve my python skills. During my 10 weeks, I have also been allowed to sit in on meetings/look at previous projects in areas that I'm interested in. For example, I have had the opportunity to discuss AR/VR/3D modelling concepts from a civil engineering point of view.
Responsibilities
The first 4 weeks of my internship I feel like I wasn't given much responsibility. My first week was spent under going training, which a lot of it didn't apply to my role (E.g: asbestos training for on site). Then the tasks after that were just writing reports/ sorting out spreadsheets. However, after a month I managed to get in contact with a small team who gave me projects with more responsibility.
Support & Guidance
For the first month, I received little support. I was given a buddy to discuss any issues with, he was very friendly and helpful, however he was on holiday for 3 weeks. My line manager on the other hand rarely responded to my questions and never acknowledged my work. I wasn't aware that I was assigned a new line manager. My new team (5weeks in) was very helpful and supportive. Wish I worked with them sooner.
Culture
Everyone is very friendly and try to make time to chat with you. The only downside is that your team is split between offices, so you don't necessarily get the chance to talk face to face with the people you are working with.
Your Impressions
The first few weeks, I didn't really enjoy the role as I didn't feel that I was getting the opportunity to put my skills to use/ learn something new. After I joined a new team about a month in, I then got projects which allowed me to make use of my skills. From this point on it was very enjoyable. I just wish I didn't waste so much time in the beginning.
Yes
I would advise not to worry about your current skill level, as your be surprised at how much you already know. Just be yourself and be honest when you are struggling as that's the best way to learn :)
