Overview
My role was to complete tasks that more senior engineers had assigned to me. On a day-to-day basis this could include filling out safety assessments on a given project, making/altering drawings on AutoCAD, using specific software such as ConceptStation to complete concept models and liaising with other engineers working on the same projects.
Skills
I have learnt new skills correlating to specific software such as ConceptStation, which I was trained in having never used it before. I developed more team working skills, having worked on a project with another engineer which resulted in presenting in front of several directors within a specific department in the company. Therefore, this also allowed me to develop my presentation and public speaking skills.
Responsibilities
A small amount of responsibility was given on one project. Here, I was filling out safety assessments on a new design, however I also had to contact external companies to receive information on whether their utilities affected this design, which gave me more responsibility. In the competition I was given a bigger responsibility, being able to design the concept for the whole project with another teammate, however this design was not actually going to be used.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support throughout my internship, from a mentor for a specific project, to supervisors to my line manager. Everyone has been on hand and very easy to contact throughout the internship. If I ever needed help or extra training on a certain project everyone was very eager to help me.
Culture
The company culture is very relaxed. They are very trustworthy in letting you get on with your work at your own pace. The general atmosphere is positive with a lot of team bonding opportunities where if you wish to not attend these, there is no pressure to.
Your Impressions
I highly enjoyed my placement due to the range of projects I was handed and the opportunities I was given to develop my relevant skills for my career and meet likeminded people. I would've wanted more responsibility in some of the projects I worked on and maybe more engineering-focused work as sometimes it felt as if I could do the work without any engineering knowledge.
Yes
Try to present yourself as confident as you possibly can without putting too much pressure on yourself. They understand if you make mistakes in the application process (such as the interview) as this is most probably one of your first times having a professional interview. You're still in a learning process in your career so take this as an opportunity to ask as many questions and talk to as many people as possible.
