Overview
Somewhat varied, some days I would be writing programs to post-process a data report using REXX, other days I would be conducting data analysis using Splunk. Sometimes I would shadow team members to observe them conducting maintenance on the mainframe system. As these were unfamiliar languages/programs I undertook lots of self-learning to gain the necessary skills I also was able to visit a data centre and learn how that operates.
Skills
Technical Skills- Splunk, Z/OS, REXX Soft skills- networking, presentation, self-motivation Wider knowledge in how the bank operates, basics of finance, other roles in tech at the bank
Responsibilities
I had access to real-life data from the syslogs, as well as access to the mainframe's testing sysplexes. I was doing tasks that were of direct use to the team.
Support & Guidance
I was mainly responsible for my own growth and learning, given the technical nature of the new programs/languages I was learning. However, whenever i needed help or guidance I was able to ask one of the team, who were always willing to assist. My wider goals for the internship were clearly communicated at key stages during the summer.
Culture
Very professional as you would expect from a large company. Everything was well-run and professionally done.
Your Impressions
I had a super time meeting some extremely interesting other interns, and I relished the opportunity to work on tasks that had a real benefit to the team.
Yes
Would very much recommend, as the bank really looks after its employees.
