Overview
I worked in the programming team within the information management team, writing code in javascript, html, css and VB. I would spend most the day writing/reviewing code and coordinating with project leads what new features were needed and anything that could be improved.
Skills
I learnt web development from scratch, first doing some individual practice and then by working on the project material. My main role was improving the UI of the website so I spent a while writing CSS and then along with this made changes to the html and javascript. The other role was using VB (excel) which I also learnt from scratch and ended up writing a fully functional 1000 line script.
Responsibilities
I had quite a lot of responsibility, being given tasks that only I was working on. This meant there was a lot of pressure to meet targets and deadlines as I was involved in a time-restricted feature that had a deadline. A lot of the work that I was doing could only be done by me at the time as it was a new solution which I learnt and hadn't been done before.
Support & Guidance
I had a lot of support from members of the team working on my project but also other projects. As there were other programmers working on my project I could ask them for help on the web development side of things. For the VB there was nobody in my project team familiar with the language so I received help from other members of the information management team.
Culture
The team were very supportive and open to providing assistance. Everyone was friendly and easy to talk to without feeling any sense of hindrance.
Your Impressions
The placement was very enjoyable, allowing me to work on areas I was interested in and develop new skills I hadn't even considered. I can't imagine a much more enjoyable placement as I was surrounded by great people and working on things I enjoy.
Yes
Be as honest as possible, optimistic, willing to learn. The interviewers were very friendly so don't stress about giving wrong answers. Try to explain your reasoning and engage in a conversation.
