Overview
I worked on two major projects (moving data from one system to another and reviewing test data) so those took up the majority of my time. I analysed a lot of data including financials, test data and customer requirements. I also participated in an employee resource group which helped create resources to help new starters. I attended meetings, reviewed products in the lab and got to know the company- I had a great time.
Skills
I have improved on several skills; excel, presenting and writing reports to prioritise the most important information. I have learned a lot of new information such as how turbos and engines work and the different types of turbos. I now have in depth knowledge about how turbos are designed and tailored for customer needs.
Responsibilities
I was- the jobs and projects I was assigned weren't 'keep the intern busy' jobs. I had real responsibility and the work I did will be used after I leave the company and was genuinely useful to our company and customers. I was not assigned any 'practice' work or anything that had no weight to it which I was very pleased with.
Support & Guidance
All of the staff at the company were very nice to me- any time I asked somebody a question they replied and were happy to help me which was nice. I also received several training sessions and tours around the plant. We had training on how to use the company software and I was allowed to spend some time getting extra qualifications for free. My manager was nice and helped me whenever I needed it.
Culture
The culture was great- everybody was welcoming and happy to help me. We were allowed to spend a few days a week working from home which was great for me as I live far away from my company. There were also several employee groups such as a women's group, an LGBT group etc which were there to be a support for people inside the company and represented the companies commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my placement. The people were really nice and there were many opportunities to socialise outside of work. I made a lot of friends and really enjoyed the work that I did. I got to know the company better and I felt like the work I did actually had an impact. I felt supported and encouraged to be the best I could be.
Yes
Be kind to others- Cummins values diversity and inclusion greatly and people who work there must be able to respect and be kind to everyone. Work hard and always try something before asking for help, however if help is needed it is always available when you ask for it.
