    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • It was primarily working in the office - often it was conducting photo-ID for dolphin fins to determine their identity from their back-catalogue. Either that or listening to audio-recordings from hydrophones to collect data on dolphin vocalisations. Boat work included surveys on dolphin populations and behaviour (taking photos and recording the positions of dolphins) and also loggerhead turtles. We also went weekly to the turtle rescue centre where we helped the veterinarian with her work looking after injured or ill turtles.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was not given much - we were responsible for handling and storing equipment and doing research and data collection that would be used for actual research, which was probably the most "responsible" thing we had to do.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It was quiet in the office but mostly friendly. This team was very focused so it felt high pressure at times. I got the impression they were fairly stressed and worked too much overtime to be healthy.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed aspects of it but it was quite hard work and I felt like support was lacking at times. The work itself was not varied but I could have asked for a greater variety of tasks. The opportunity to work with dolphins regularly was amazing though, we saw them every time we went to see.
