Overview
Used various sampling techniques and calls with clients to assess the validity of the financial statements they produce. The work is based on excel - so you will be pretty proficient by the end of the placement. Travel often to client sites which keeps the role interesting and builds your confidence communicating with clients and I had 5 away jobs where we were accommodated in hotels due to their offices being far from Leeds.
Skills
Excel Confidence when working in new environments and when working in new teams Understand financial statements and companies house documents
Responsibilities
Yes, had one on one calls with clients within the first 2 weeks. This is daunting but really pushed me to understand the work and I could always add my colleagues into the calls if I felt i needed support answering the clients questions. You will be in charge of various sections of the audit (payroll, stock etc) by the end of month 2.
Support & Guidance
3 day intro to accounting training course - overwhelming amount of content Great mentor programme in place Had a training record which contained feedback from managers on each client
Culture
Positive, hard-working, motivating, balanced, youthful (15 new starters in my intake 18yrs-25yrs)
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it more and more throughout the placement and as you get to know the work and your colleagues better. Seeing myself get better throughout the placement was a great motivator. As they trusted you to work on more challenging sections of the audit this made the work more fulfilling. There were multiple balls/dinners/socials which were great.
Yes
Look on the GT website for CLEARR values/ethos etc. They will definitely crop up during the application process. Be chatty and speak up during the team challenge within the assessment centre. Contact former placement students or other new colleagues on linked in as everyone I spoke to was very friendly and helpful. If your looking for an accountancy/finance based placement I would definitely recommend Grant Thornton.
