Overview
I worked on a 10-week research project in Chemical Development. It was an independent project, so I did not work on projects that my team was involved in. I mainly used one analytical technique- mass spectrometry, however, had an opportunity to shadow other analysts and chemists to learn more about other analytical techniques and process chemistry. On a day-to-day basis, I would come into the office and check my emails, and plan my work for the day. In the first couple of weeks I was spending most of my time in the lab, but once I collected the data I needed, I was sat at my desk analysing it. I had regular meeting with my supervisor (once a week), during which I would update them on the work I was doing and discuss any challenges I was encountering. I also attended a bunch of networking events and meeting. For lunch I normally met up with other summer interns, but occasionally me and my team had lunch together.
Skills
I definitely feel a lot more confident in chemistry in general after this internship. I have more of an idea of the applications of chemistry in industry. I improved my knowledge on mass spectrometry and I have learnt how to perform work in the lab up to a high standard. I improved my organisational and research skills, as I had to plan my own experiments and work. I also improved my time management skills. After delivering regular presentations and making and presenting a scientific poster to all analytical teams on site, I gained confidence in public speaking.
Responsibilities
I was in full control of my project, which I really enjoyed. I was given a project idea at the start of my internship, however, I was given the opportunity to plan the specific experiments and set aims myself. My supervisor was very supportive of my ideas and offered his help when I needed it. Overall, I did not feel like I was under much pressure but I enjoyed the amount of responsibility I was given within my individual project.
Support & Guidance
A lot! Whenever I needed help, my team and other employees were there for me. Everyone tried their best to help and support each other.
Culture
The atmosphere is great. There is lots of social events hosted on a weekly basis. My team had breakfast together once a week, and lunches occasionally. People are friendly, welcoming and supportive.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot. I liked the work I was performing and the team I was placed in. Working in industry for this short period of time, made me aware of what I like and dislike within chemistry and gave me more of an idea of what I want to do in the future.
Yes
Make sure you know why you want to work for AstraZeneca and in pharmaceutical industry in general. In the interview, keep in mind that all your experiences matter to them even these not related to your chemistry career, as long as they stand with the company values.
