Overview
As a Software Engineering Intern, your role is to work on the project you had been given or decided on with your manager and mentor. This involves designing, developing, and testing the application or software you create. Additionally, you work on a group project throughout the internship with fellow interns. At the end of the internship, you present your work on both projects to other employees and interns.
Skills
My programming skills (Java, JavaScript, React) have benefited greatly from my time at Capital One. Additionally, I have gained more experience of working in an Agile software development environment. My interpersonal skills (communication, conflict resolution, etc.) also developed by working so closely with team members.
Responsibilities
I felt that I was given adequate responsibility - I was in control of my project and had a lot of say in the design decisions being made. There was enough help such that the responsibility didn't feel overwhelming, which was nice.
Support & Guidance
The support was excellent - my mentor was always on hand to support me and all of my other team members were also always willing to help. The quality of their advice and support was very high and contributed greatly to the success of my project.
Culture
Company culture is welcoming, inclusive, and supportive. As a transgender person, I faced no discrimination as a result of it. Work-life balance is taken incredibly seriously and you are highly encouraged to keep a healthy balance. You only have to go into the office twice a week as well, which contributes to this good balance.
Your Impressions
I massively enjoyed my time on the internship. I would recommend it to anyone thinking about it!
Yes
The interview process is quite long but if you get past the initial few stages (coding assessment and one-way interview) you have a good chance of making it through. Otherwise, just be yourself. Try and talk to Capital One recruiters beforehand; talking to them can be a good way to boost your application chances as they can offer tips + they now know your name.
