    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The first week was induction which involved talks from members of the Firm on the Firm's culture, legal workshops, and networking. The next two weeks were spent in two practice areas within the Firm. Tasks ranged from sitting in on meetings and taking minutes, drafting contracts, conducting legal and market research and comparing contracts.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I greatly improved my interpersonal skills within a professional setting as I was able to meet such a variety of people with the Firm ranging from partners to secretaries to business support staff. In addition I also developed my adaptability as I was constantly exposed to new and challenging work.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • We were provided with very comprehensive information about the types of potential opportunities available to us in terms of both client and international secondments during the training contract in addition to the practice areas available for qualification. Although the secondments are subject to changing in the future, they were a good indication in the type of opportunity.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Extremely friendly. Throughout the experience everyone I spoke to was happy to pause their work to welcome me and answer any questions I had about the team or the practice area. I never felt like I needed to keep my head down and was actively encourage to speak to as many people as possible. Even the Global co-Chair accepted a coffee invite from an intern!

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
  • If the initial online application is the same as when I completed it then do not choose a generic news story to comment on as I am sure the Early Careers Team have heard enough about AI and Brexit; choose something unique! When it comes to the interview try not to over prepare and make sure to be yourself as you will be able to relate much better to your interviewer.
