    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I joined a team within G-Research as a software engineer. On a day-to-day basis, I was working on my personal project, either through the development of software or communications with stakeholders.


    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot about the area of computational finance, through both specifically designed courses, and talking to people within G-Research. My programming skills were also improved within the team setting, compared to courseworks etc. I also gained more general engineering skills, such as more thorough documentation of approaches and the use of organisational tools such as Jira.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given large amounts of responsibility over my project. The approach taken and a number of technical choices were left to me. My team were on hand, however, for any questions I had. I felt like I had autonomy, but I was not on my own in any situations.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had weekly meetings with my mentor to discuss the progress of my project, allowing me to raise any concerns or ideas. I also had bi-weekly meetings with my manager and a member of the HR team for more broad discussions about progress. Outside these talks, my team were always happy to discuss aspects of their work and ideas for my project.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company has an excellent culture, people are very smart, but always willing to share knowledge with you. The intern cohort had a number of social activities, alongside the wider company socials. The office always felt lively and welcoming.

  • I enjoyed my internship to a great extent. The impact of the work I did, alongside being able to interact with exceedingly smart colleagues made the experience a great one.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to G-Research
  • The variety of roles available and what tech stacks are used within each are very broad. You will be able to find a team that suits you. Even if you don't have an existing knowledge of finance, the work itself is very interesting regardless, and you will learn more very quickly.
